The problem
Wrinkles develop horizontally across the forehead. They may be visible with expression, at rest, or both.
What causes forehead wrinkles?
The frontalis muscle is the lifting force for the eyebrows. As it contracts, the forehead skin is pulled closer together, creating furrows. Fine lines are seen in young adults and after repeated brow elevation, these wrinkles can become deeper and more prominent.
Horizontal forehead wrinkles tend to be more obvious in people with a droopy brow, excess upper eyelid skin, and droopy upper eyelids (eyelid ptosis) as a compensatory response. Sun exposure can accelerate the progression of facial wrinkles.
Often seen with
Frown lines (glabellar creases), droopy eyebrow, redundant upper eyelid skin, droopy upper eyelid (blepharoptosis), photodamage, aging.
What you see in the mirror
Horizontal forehead lines, either fine, moderate, or deep. These become more obvious with forehead muscle contraction (lifting the eyebrows).
