The problem
The eyelid skin has areas of lighter color or pigment loss. The lighter zones can be large or small and can skip areas. They may enlarge or shrink over time.
Causes
Vitiligo is a condition associated with patches of skin depigmentation. The cause of vitiligo is not known, but it is thought that it may be related to an autoimmune disorder. Genetic and viral causes are also theorized. In this condition there is destruction of melanocytes, the cells responsible for the creation of pigment or melanin in the skin.
Loss of pigment can also be caused by chemical peels, cryotherapy, certain topical medications or eye drops, steroid injections, burns or scars, albinism, and rarely infections.
Not to be confused with
Hyperpigmentation, or increased pigment. These two entities can occur at the same time.
