How to choose between under eye fillers and surgery for eye bags

The two most effective treatments for under-eye bags are dermal filler injections (Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero) and cosmetic lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).  The factors that determine if you should have one versus the other (or neither) to treat eye bags include:

1. What are your goals and expectations?

2. What does your facial and eyelid structure dictate?

3. Are you willing to undergo a surgical procedure?

4. How much you wish to financially invest

5. Most importantly, what is your surgeon’s expert advice?

Eye bags have several causes and a variety of fixes

In my cosmetic practice in NY I evaluate eye bags on a daily basis.  See my previous infographic on eye bag causes here.

Most people who complain about their under-eye area have a combination of bulging lower eyelid fat and hollowing under the fat pouch extending to the upper cheek.  Fillers are a great option for those who don’t have excessively large fat pouches and for those who wish to avoid surgery.  Often, the results of a well-done filler treatment are as good as blepharoplasty surgery, but they don’t last as long.  Surgery however, has a longer recovery time.  In consultation, I discuss both options to help you arrive at the best solution for you.

Below is a breakdown of some major differences between under eye filler treatments and cosmetic eye bag surgery.
